Sewing Pants Workshop

Have you ever wanted to learn how to sew your own lounge pants or shorts? Then this is the workshop for you!

If you know the absolute basics, take your sewing to the next level and sew your own lounge pants or shorts. These will have an elasticated waistband and a comfy fit. Gain the skills and confidence to embark on your garment sewing journey. There are two sewing patterns to choose from:

*The Tessuti Robbie Pants sewing pattern https://www.tessuti-shop.com/products/robbie-pants-pattern  which is great for day-to-day as well as lounging. Check out all the different versions on Instagram #robbiepants. This pattern attracts an additional fee of $15, your tutor will contact you prior to the workshop to explain the process.

Or

*Alternatively, you can make the Walk the Plank Pyjama Bottoms. These come in knee length, shorts and pants and are a unisex pattern https://www.patternsforpirates.com/product/wtp-adult/ This is a free pattern.

Once you enrol, your teacher will contact you to find out which pattern you would like to make.

Skills you will learn:

  • Follow a sewing pattern
  • Make simple fit adjustments
  • How to measure yourself and choose your size
  • Sew a curved seam
  • Cut your fabric accurately
  • Attach an elastic waistband
  • Sew a hem
  • Finish your seams so they don’t fray

What to bring:

  • Bring your own sewing machine or if you do not have your own sewing machine you are welcome to use one of our 2 sewing machines in the college for $10 per person( this goes towards maintenance of the machines). Please call us on 9482 1189 to book a machine
  • If you are bringing your own sewing machine, bring your manual (if available). Also, ensure you have a fresh needle, size 80/12 and 70/10 would be ideal. You can usually buy a packet with a mix of sizes. Have a few spare in case a needle breaks.
  • 2-3 metres of woven fabric, recommended fabrics include linen/cotton blends, cotton lawn, flannel. If you are shopping for fabric, you can ask for assistance on the quantity you may need at the fabric store.
  • Matching colour all purpose thread if you are bringing your own fabric
  • We will take a short break to have some lunch, so it’s best to bring some so that you don’t waste too much precious sewing time. Alternatively, there are plenty of food outlets up the road where you can purchase something.
  • If you have some fabric scissors and thread snips, bring them along, but there will be some spare on the day.
  • Pen and paper to take notes
